A task is one step that runs. A workflow with a trigger and two steps uses about three tasks each time it runs. Steps that fail, and steps skipped by a condition, also count. Tests count too.

Example: 20 website leads a day through trigger → Google Sheets → WhatsApp is about 20 × 3 × 30 ≈ 1,800 tasks a month: more than Starter, well within Growth.

When you run out, runs are refused (webhooks answer 403 Insufficient task balance) until you top up.

Settings → Plan and usage shows your plan, tasks used and left, successful and failed tasks, work held for running, and Where your tasks went (by workflow, last 30 days).

Plan and usage: Starter plan, 1 of 1,200 tasks used, Compare plans, and Where your tasks went
